About the Special lssue

In recent decades, many evidence has shown that a balanced diet rich in varieties of macro and micronutrients allows to maintain a healthy immune system. In fact, sufficient amounts of minerals such as zinc and magnesium, micronutrients, herbs and vitamin-rich foods can help the immune system function not only to prevent infections but also to react better against many pathological conditions such as hypersensitivity and autoimmune diseases. Nutritional status is closely linked to metabolic health status. Metabolic imbalances can induce alteration of immune function due to defective antioxidant mechanisms and microbiota alterations.

This issue aims to provide a comprehensive view of the scientific literature of a well-balanced diet in supporting optimal immune function by highlighting the importance of nutrients known for their potential to improve the functionality of the various components of the immune system. Preclinical, clinical, meta-analysis studies and analytical reviews will help to deepen the molecular mechanisms used by minerals, vitamins, micronutrients, polyphenols etc.  by which nutrition can affect the immune response and its role in preventing numerous immunopathologies.
